March 25, 2018 - Jaguar Land Rover is proud to announce it will debut three new vehicles at the New York International Auto Show alongside its widest range of vehicles in company history. The company unveiled a concept version of the forthcoming iX3 battery-electric crossover SUV. This also fits with Jaguar's brand director's statements that it has been considering an SUV for this class. Chinese-market volatility, the cloud around diesels, and Brexit uncertainty have contributed to a sales slump so dire that Jaguar's Castle Bromwich plant is going to a three-day week for the rest of the year. Tesla may not have made money on those cars, but the fact that a start-up manufacturer is luring paying customers out of industry-benchmark cars is noteworthy. Hard as it is 鈥?especially right now, with so few of them out in the world 鈥?we really suggest taking the chance to spend some time in one before you buy or lease. Not good, and 鈥?unlike the XE 鈥?I didn't think I could do much better without greatly altering my admittedly aggressive driving habits. Better late than never? Designed by the same team as the C-X17 concept vehicle, the F-PACE remains true to the aesthetic of the award-winning concept.

And it's quite the looker, blending elements from the stillborn C-X75 hybrid hypercar and Jaguar's conventionally powered F-Pace and E-Pace SUVs. For one thing, Jaguar's brand director said he wasn't sure that the company's existing platforms could be scaled down far enough for such a compact crossover. Now, I knew from the outset this was going to be a far different experience than our previous long-termer, a 2017 Jaguar XE diesel. Perhaps best of all, an all-EV Jaguar range would dramatically reduce JLR's average corporate fuel economy, potentially eliminating the engineering and design contortions Land Rover faces in order to maintain Land Rover brand values and adhere to regulations. In fact, it only leaves one real option in the Jaguar Land Rover line for this vehicle: the Range Rover Evoque platform, which is also shared with the Discovery Sport. Using that platform also means Jaguar would probably borrow one or more engines from the Evoque and Discovery Sport. We just hope Jaguar can inject some more fun into it than Land Rover did with the Discovery Sport. I wish there were some more pockets and cubbies, but the small shelf in front of the shifter proved to be a good home for my phone and a couple of Honey Stinger waffles.
I'm having a good time! Problem is that Jaguar and its dealers are having plenty of problems now. It鈥檚 true that, much like most of my colleagues and many of you, I鈥檓 a fan of fast, sleek, rear-drive Jaguar sports cars and sedans, like the F-Type and XF. Lexus offers seven hybrids, including four sedans, a coupe and the NX and RX crossovers. Jaguar InControl Remote鈩?functionality allows users of iOS and Android鈩?smartphones to connect to the car remotely to control car functions, including deactivating the alarm, locking or unlocking the doors, remote heating or cooling the cabin through engine start. A variable geometry turbocharger delivers high levels of boost pressure from low engine speeds, and together with the highly precise 1,800bar common rail injection system, enables maximum torque output of 318 lb. Voice control using plain speech gives access to any level of the system, without the need for drivers to take their eyes off the road or navigate through menus3,4.
This EV accelerates with ease (and very little noise) and maintains a solid grip on the road. Road feedback and feel was good, with the cabin isolated from common road imperfections. It's a small SUV platform with a transverse layout. Jaguar only offers a manual on the F-Type sports car in the US, so there really isn't any reason to add one to a small crossover. Don't expect any of the overseas manual transmissions to make the trip, though. British automaker Jaguar is especially guilty of this, and during the mid 2000s, seemed only to showcase cars they would never make. Jaguar F-Pace may be getting a little sibling soon. It's not as drastic as the electric I-Pace concept, but there's so little space between the bumper and the base of the windshield that we sincerely doubt that a longitudinal inline-4 or V6 could be lurking under the hood. Two years later, a new mid-sized I-Pace would debut as both the F-Pace and E-Pace fade out. This thoroughly-covered model makes us believe we won't see the crossover's debut until an auto show in early-2018 at the soonest. Considering that the 180-horsepower diesel model will arrive in the US under the hood of the Jaguar XE, it's possible that it will show up in the E-Pace as well. As for when Jaguar will show the uncovered production E-Pace, it could be a while. A smaller crossover, which we expect will be called the E-Pace, has been caught during winter testing. As the Autocar article's written, come 2027 Jaguar would have an electric XJ sedan, a full-sized EV crossover, the I-Pace, and perhaps an electric sports car. The UK magazine reports the automaker's product planners have devised a ten-year plan to switch to a pure EV lineup of cars and crossovers. Right now, Jaguar sells seven models - four sedans and three crossovers.
